BASEBALL

Mt. Vernon Optimist offers Spring competition and Fall training baseball programs.  Spring regular season is primarily geared for practices, then competitive games and tournament matches.  Fall is for practices and games, there are no Fall T-ball nor Babe Ruth leagues.  Fall tournament only for Rookie and Minors if conducted.

NEW BASEBALL BAT STANDARDS.

New Standard for Bats in Youth Baseball

Starting January 1, 2018 USA Baseball is implementing a new bat standard. Many of the
sanctioning bodies of youth baseball including Little League, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth Baseball, Pony, and American Amateur Baseball Congress will be following this new standard.

The Mt Vernon Optimist baseball league is not sanctioned by any of these leagues but we
operate very closely to their rules and regulations so we have decided to implement this new
standard on a gradual scale starting on January 1, 2018. For the 2018 season in the spring and
the fall all players in the Rookie (7 and 8 year olds), Minor (9 and 10 year olds), Major (11 and
12 year olds), Babe Ruth (13 and over) must have bats approved by the new USA Baseball bat
standard. All other ages must have bats that meet the new standard by the start of the 2018
Fall Baseball season.

We are working with Dick’s Sporting Goods to have a demo day for the new standard of bats
sometime over the winter. Once we determine a date and time we will pass along that
information. Attached is more information on the new standard and some prices of bats that
Dick’s offers. The new standard is being adopted to promote safety and more universal play.
The Mt Vernon Optimist club will be purchasing new bats that meet this new standard for team
bags for those affected in the spring and then again in the fall.
